Alternative energy

Alternative energyThe benefits of alternative energy are abundant. Many believe that different kinds of energy can rid many people of many energy-related problems. However, there is a hesitancy among some power companies to develop these other forms of energy.

But first, perhaps alternative energy needs to be defined in order to better understand what is being discussed. For the most part, alternative can be replaced with the word “renewable.” This means that the energy comes from natural sources that that can be used again and again and again.

Perhaps the two most common forms of this renewable energy are solar energy and wind-powered energy. Studies have shown that there are indeed many benefits associated with the use of these kinds of energy.

One of the biggest benefits associated with alternative forms of energy is the fact that it helps to keep the air and earth much cleaner than energy produced by coal or oil which releases emissions into the air.

Another of the benefits is the fact that there is an unlimited supply of solar and wind energy. Even if every home, business and school in the world were run on alternative energy there would not ever be a shortage.

Despite these benefits, not all are rushing to use this renewable energy. Despite the fact that many large energy companies are using alternative energy at some level, there are very few – if any – that produce solely renewable energy.

The reason for this is two-fold. First of all, the cost of building a large scale wind farm that would produce enough electricity for a company to service all of its customers is often quite steep, especially when compared to what the company would pay to simply continue to operate the coal-powered plants they currently use.

Secondly, not only would doing this be cost-prohibitive for many companies, but it is also often logistically impossible. Because an energy company would need a lot of land in order to be able to put up all of the solar panels of wind generators that it needs to provide all with electricity, if there isn’t enough land in the optimal areas, then doing this becomes nearly impossible.

Large energy companies, however, are not the only ones who hesitate to use this alternative energy. Doing so can be cost-prohibitive for many normal homeowners as well. When things are measured in kilowatt hours, it often is the case that fuel-powered energy is cheaper for homeowners than it is for those who have solar energy tied to the local grid.

This cost can often be offset by the consumer being able to “sell” its energy to the energy company for credits. But much of this depends on the amount of credit the energy company gives back to the homeowner. Because some systems can cost upwards of $10,000 to buy and install, it could take quite some time to get a return on the investment.

However, $10,000 is an extreme example for a larger home. Most homes would cost less than $5,000 to purchase and have installed. More money could be saved if the system is installed by the owner, himself.

One of the things that some have turned to doing who are not able to pay the initial cost of a full-fledged solar power system for their home is to simply buy one panel at a time. Doing this will help to off-set energy costs gradually. As the homeowner continues to save money, he will then have more money to buy another panel and gradually complete the installation of the panels on his home.

In addition to all of this, another advantage is that the home does not have to be tied to the local grid. That means that any excess energy that the home does not immediately use can be stored in a battery for use at a later time. Therefore even if al of the homes on a grid are out of energy from a blackout, the home that collects and uses its own alternative energy will be able to continue to operate effectively.
